XnViewMP: Free Mac App To Edit, Compress, Classify & Convert Images

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On Sunday, December 18, 2011 0 comments
We’ve reviewed small Mac apps that edit, convert or compress images in a few formats, but finding an app that converts and compresses images between a large number of formats, and that too, for free, isn’t easy. XnViewMP is a Mac app that compresses images in JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, JPEG-XR, JPEG 2000, PCX, PDF and TGA formats. The app offers a way to organize your images either into categories, or to add colored tags to them. It comes with a built in file browser that keeps track of file locations, and a color enhancer that allows you to adjust brightness, contrast, gamma, hue, saturation, lightness and to increase red, green and blue color levels. The app allows you to save a set of presets, and reuse them on an image. Changes made to an image can be previewed live.
The app has its own file browser and image viewer. All images you open are opened as tabs within the main app window, and you can easily switch between them. When you first launch the app, the browser view will open and you can start looking for images on your system. The app opens four windows (within the main window) by default. One for browsing files, one to see the categories, an image preview window and an image info window. The preview and info windows are populated only when you select an image. The info shows image properties and EFIX data, among other things. To add an image to a category, drag it from the browsing pane and drop it onto the relevant category in the category window.
XnViewMP
From the file viewer you can adjust the color levels, hue, saturation, brightness, contrast etc., by clicking the third last button on the top bar. Move the sliders for brightness, contrast, gamma, hue, lightness and saturation, and adjust them anyway you like. To reset them to their original position, click the orange button at the end of each slider. If you want to save the combination of changes you made, click the save button next to Presets.
XnViewMP adjust colors
To set compression levels for an image, go to the File menu when viewing an image (in the app’s image viewer) and select Format Settings… For each of the file formats, there will be a different compression criteria, visit each format tab to see the compression criteria. When you save changes to an image, it will be saved and compressed as per these settings.
XnViewMP compress
You can rate or label an image from the File menu as well. Select Rating & Color Label from the File menu, and choose an option from the submenu to categorize the current image. The app’s best feature is, no doubt, its ability to compress images for such a wide range of formats, and then perhaps secondary features like image labeling and format conversion are taken into consideration.

Mount Virtual Disc Images In Ubuntu Linux With Furius ISO Mount

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On 0 comments
Mounting disc images to a virtual drive can help view the data without having to burn the image to disc. Most users prefer disc images in standard formats (such as ISO format) to avoid straining the lens of their optical drive, as running a game, movie, etc  from a CD/DVD drive reduces its life. But, it is not just disc image formats that need to be mounted for viewing their content, most Linux backup tools use the IMG format for creating system backups. Such a format can also be mounted using a disc image mounting application to read the data in image file without having to restore the complete backup.
Furius ISO Mount is a Linux application for mounting ISO, IMG, BIN, MDF and NRG Image files, allowing you to play games, watch movies and view backup files by simply accessing the image file. The application is available in Ubuntu repository. You can also download and install it using the following command in Terminal:
sudo apt-get install furiusisomount
Once installed, you can open any supported image file by selecting it via Browse. Just specify the file that want to open, and then click Mount.
Furius ISO Mount
Apart from mounting disc images, you can check MD5 and SHA 1 checksums and burn ISO and IMG disc images to optical drives. While burning a disc image you can either use the Brasero back-end or select the Nautilus option. The application maintains a log file to analyze the issues and errors encountered while reading the content from the image. Clicking View Log will open the detailed log file to identify the issues.

You can download the Deb and source package for Furius ISO Mount from Launchpad.

Edit & Restore Windows Hosts File And Block Websites With Host Mechanic

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On 1 comments
Host Mechanic is a portable application to edit, delete and restore the Windows default hosts file. This application makes it easy to add entries to Windows hosts file; you won’t have to navigate to system32/drivers/etc folder every time just to add new domains and change mapped IPs. All you need is to launch the application, enter the domain followed by IP address to add the domain entry to hosts file. Moreover, it lets you restore the Windows hosts file and block websites by mapping them with localhost. For those who aren’t familiar with hosts file, it allows users and authenticated applications to map domains with defined IPs to either block the access or boost the access speed.
To modify the host file, launch Host Mechanic, enter the IP address and the host address. Click Add to Host to insert the mapped entry into Windows hosts file. The Restore Default Host File lets you restore the previously used hosts file. Underneath the restore option, you have Delete Host File option to remove the hosts file.
Host Mechanic - Exclusive AskVG App [Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64]
It must be noted that the hosts file can be vulnerable to malicious attacks due to its role in domain name resolution. Blocking access to servers by redirecting them to the local host i.e. 127.0.0.1, may have security implications. This is because 127.0.0.1 is accessible only by the host system. While host mechanic provides an easy mechanism for editing the host file, you can also check out the manual method for editing the host file  here. Host Mechanic works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Hipstamatic Disposable For iPhone: Share Camera Rolls With Facebook Friends

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On 0 comments
Back in the old days, it was exciting to wait for the whole film roll in a camera to develop to see a particular snapshot. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a taste of that again? From the team behind Hipstamatic and IncrediBooth comes Hipstamatic Disposable for iPhone, a free app that lets you choose from a collection of disposable cameras, each with a different filter and a capacity of twenty four photos. Once you have captured the twenty four shots, the app allows you to view them, share them in bulk or individually over Twitter and email. What makes Hipstamatic Disposable stand out from other apps of its genre is that you can invite Facebook friends to a camera you chose (provided they have the app too), allowing them to shoot photos with you until the roll runs out. The collective roll of resulting photos is automatically synced between all parties.
 Hipstamatic-Disposable-for-ios Invite-Facebook-Friends
From the app’s homescreen, you can start snapping photos by tapping start new camera. From within the screen that follows, you can go with the default (D-fault) camera or purchase other disposable cameras (each with a different effect) from within the app. After you’ve made your selection, the app lets you choose a sticker (skin) for your camera. As mentioned earlier, you can invite friends from Facebook who have the app on their iOS devices to capture snapshots with the same camera. The resulting album is shared between all participating users.
Each camera has a slider to set the intensity of the filter/effect that is applied to each photo. Tap the flash toggle, and the app lets out that familiar sound old camera flashlights used to make while powering up. The number of photos left in a camera (or at least the D-fault camera) is displayed in the bottom-left corner of the capturing screen.

When the camera roll runs out, the app lets you view, geotag and share all photos over Twitter or via email. Sharing can be done in bulk or individually.
Hipstamatic Disposable’s quality vintage interface, unique camera sharing feature and impressive results make it a must-have for all photography enthusiasts. The app is available for free on the iTunes App Store. Grab it from the link provided below.

Edit Photos, View EXIF Data & Apply Filters With Photo Light For WP7

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On 0 comments
Even a platform like Windows Phone 7 has no shortage of photo editing apps. There are apps for just about every aspect of image post-processing. However, there is still room for new apps in that category, apps that integrate most or all of the most popular features, as no one likes to use too many apps for editing one photo. Photo Light is a new, free addition to Mango’s photo editors, which really has the potential to become a one-stop shop for basic photo-editing on your WP7 device.

Photo Light WP7 Photo Light Edit
There are many apps in the Marketplace that let you apply a specific filter or effect to your photos, such as previously covered Lomolizer. While such apps might be suitable for some of the photos you want to edit, it is likely that you end up using a bunch of other apps for the rest. Photo Light aims to be your go-to photo editor. It isn’t too minimalistic and not too complicated either. The app allows you to edit images that you have already captured, or you can use the camera option to snap a pic from within the app and edit it straight away. The app doesn’t come with options to add a lot of colors and effects to your photos (like you can in PuriClub), but it isn’t meant to be used that way. Photo Light deals with the three basic aspects of an image; Brightness, Contrast and Dimensions, each of which can be adjusted on a slider. If you are worried about the resulting (post-modification) size, you can find it out beforehand with the calculate size button.
Photo Light Filters Photo Light EXIF
However, that’s not where the usefulness of Photo Light ends. The app also offers a few basic filters like Sharpen, Emboss, Gray scale and Blur. You can also remove noise from your photos. None of these filters are customizable, that is, you cannot specify the intensity of a filter before applying it to the image. In addition to all the editing features, you can use Photo Light to view the EXIF and location data embedded in a photo. The Marketplace has dedicated apps for viewing EXIF data (such as Image Map), but in Photo Light, it is just a small part of the whole setup.
This app integrates with the Pictures hub, and also has Live Tile support. You can check Photo Light out at the Web Marketplace link below.

Create Disk Image & Clone Hard Disk Partition With Ubuntu Live USB

Posted by Internet Business Consultant On 0 comments
Earlier, we showed you how to create persistent Ubuntu Live media disk, and use it for resetting and changing Windows 7 administrator and standard user account password. Apart from tweaking with Windows registry hives, Ubuntu Live media disk can be used to create data backup, shrink partitions, clone hard disk, scan system for viruses, imaging disk partitions and more. Although disk imaging or hard disk cloning can be done using data backup and disk copying applications, malware-infected OS often make it hard to perform essential data backup operations. For instance, if a PC is infected with boot sector virus, disk cloning application doesn’t work unless you clean the system from virus and repair boot sector.
Ubuntu Live media disk lets you clone disks and create disk images, so that you can easily restore the data after performing low-level cleaning of the system. In this post, we will look at 2 simple ways for cloning and imaging disks using Ubuntu Live USB.
The first step is to change the system boot priority from BIOS menu. On system startup, press F2, F10, ESC, DEL, or other system defined key for accessing BIOS menu. Now, open Boot menu to set USB Hard disk/Removable Drive as first boost option. Once done, save the changes, plug-in Ubuntu Live USB, and the reboot the system. Once rebooted, it will take you to Ubuntu Live boot menu, select Run Ubuntu from this USB option to load Ubuntu OS.

Create Image of local disk partition to external hard drive

Once Ubuntu 10.10 is loaded, plug-in the external hard disk on which you want to create your primary hard disk image, and then mount the external hard disk from Places menu.
mount disk 1
We will use Ubuntu dd command to create disk image. The command is widely used to perform low-level data copying and disk cloning operations. Using if (input file) and of (output file) operands, we can use dd to create an exact copy of specified disk in IMG format. To begin, click Applications and open Terminal from Accessories menu.
2 terminal
Now navigate to media disk using cd /media command. Open the external hard disk using the cd <disk label> command. You can use cd command to navigate to folder in external hard disk where image is to be created.
3 mount
Since we need to create disk image to external drive, we will use sudo fdisk –l command to list down all the partitions of primary hard disk. This will help us identify the partition whose image is to be created on external hard disk. Once listed, note down the partition identifier under Device column, as it will be used to specify the hard disk partition with dd command to create a disk image.
4 fdisk
The syntax for creating disk image is as follows:
sudo dd if=<disk partition identifier> of=./<name of disk image>
If you for instance want to create a disk image for /dev/sda5. Enter;
sudo dd if=/dev/sda5 of=./BackupDisk.img
The time it takes to create a disk image depends upon the size of specified disk partition.
5 clone local drive to remoable drive
Once the image is created, open external hard drive location in Nautilus (Ubuntu File Explorer) to verify the disk image size. Similarly, you can create disk images for other partitions of primary hard disk in external storage medium.
Screenshot-DISK
The dd command also lets you restore or extract the IMG file to specified location. The syntax of extracting IMG file is as follows.
sudo dd if=.<name of disk image file> of=<output location>
You can specify the local disk where data is to be extracted or specify the folder hierarchy where you want to copy the data from IMG file.
sudo dd if=./BackupDisk.img of=/dev/sda3
6 extract cloned to local.png
It must be noted that when you restore data from IMG file using dd command, it will wipe all the free space of target drive. The screenshot below shows the cloned D drive. To reclaim the free space, copy the data from cloned drive to other disk and then format the cloned drive using Windows built-in Format utility.
cloned

Clone Local Disk Using Ubuntu Live USB

The process of cloning disk is similar to creating disk image. All you need is to mount the primary hard disk and navigate to it in Terminal using cd <disk identifier> command.
15
Once mounted, use sudo fdisk –l to list down hard disk partitions, so that you can note down the Device identifiers of both disks including disk which is to be cloned and target disk where data is to be copied.
Screenshot-5
For instance, if you want to create a clone of /dev/sda5 in /dev/sda3. Enter following command
sudo dd if=/dev/sd5 of=/dev/sd3
